Golf carts are not street legal in India mainly because they are not designed for public roads. They are made for use inside private areas like resorts, factories, airports, and gated societies.

The main reason is rules. In India, any vehicle used on public roads must follow the Central Motor Vehicle Rules and must be registered with the RTO. Golf carts usually do not meet these rules, so they cannot be registered.

Another reason is safety. Golf carts are slow and lightweight. They usually do not have important safety features like strong body structure, airbags, or full road safety systems. Because of this, they are not safe to mix with fast moving traffic on public roads.

Also, golf carts are treated as off road vehicles in India. They are mainly allowed inside private properties and do not require registration for such use.

Right now, some areas may allow limited use with special permission, but it is not common.

In the future, things may change. With the growth of electric vehicles in India, there is increasing interest in small low speed transport options. Golf carts or similar vehicles may become legal for short distance city use, but this will need new rules and safety standards. It will take time before this happens.
